ceramic sculpture | installation

I combine architectural and environmental inspirations to integrate metaphorically, juxtaposing the human-made and naturally occurring world. I build ‘functional sculptures’ that incorporate both wheel-thrown and hand-built techniques, creating an ongoing desire for harmony in my work.

This collection is inspired by 18th century boughpots. I apply technical skills and careful construction to create a “ware.” The boughpot is a functional, decorative object; a domestic, ceramic piece symbolizing the paradoxical relationship of uncultivated environment and humankind. I want to develop this concept itself and lean further into the undercurrent of my work, reaching beyond mere functionality. Where are those rare notes of harmony between the modest resilience of the natural world and humanity's persistent desire for control?

Exhibited at the Gardiner Museum and Craft Ontario Gallery.
